    I found some of the lesson content a bit abstract - I think I was looking for more hands-on information about exactly how to go about setting up your business - detailed advice about legal and business issues.     Gary's flexibility with the direction of the program and material; Gary's knowledge about the subject matter and his responsiveness to questions; the intuitive layout of the web site; external links were simply awesome; and the technical support was really great, too.

    What suggestions do you have?

    It would be so helpful for everyone to have more people engage in the Discussion Board! One of the benefits to the traditional face to face learning environments is the opportunity to communicate with fellow students, using the course teaching as a springboard to further discussions. This activity COULD happen in an online environment, thus further enhancing the learning experience for everyone. Perhaps, in order to get students accustomed to using this tool is to post a component of each teaching module on the discussion board. I would not require a response from students, but I would at least have them "test the waters" so to speak and see if the chat level increases. Many thanks for a great Class!

    The wealth of resources and links I discovered as I worked through the lessons was invaluable.

    The classroom instructor needs to have a "prompt, a question" for each of the lessons to get students to use the discussion board. One of my goals was to hear about other students' experiences and learn from them, but that was not met. I feel the instructor needs to find a way to engage the students so discussion will occur. In a regular classroom setting, the instructor generally poses questions to generate a discussion. The same applies in an online class, especially if it is a class where students aren't self-motivated to pose questions (some classes will pose a lot of questions, others will not). For me, classroom discussion is key to what contributes to a good class.

    Make sure all the audio messages are operating for all the lessons. I would have liked to see more content in those messages rather than just an overview and pep talk about the lesson. Update supplemental materials such as the 2002 tax forms, etc. I think the content could be broken down into two classes - beginning and advanced. Just felt there was a great deal to work through in the amount of time aloted.

    The amount of material included in each lesson was good--not too much, not too little. I did spend much more than the estimated hour or two on each lesson, but that's because I found so much to think about and work with in each lesson.

    The links to other websites were enormously helpful, as were documents and links on the GSI site.

    Responses from the instructor on the Discussion board were quick and helpful.

    I liked the sequence and organization of the lessons.

    A side benefit of the course was learning about a lot of technological tools that I either had never heard of before or had been too technophobic to try. So I feel that I learned more than just how to freelance in this course.

    With the exception of the downtime that resulted from the power outage (which was of course not GSI's fault), all the lessons were made available on time. Being able to count on the promised schedule meant that I could plan much better about how to pace myself with respect to other activities.

    Having the last lesson available several days early was also a plus.

    The course gave good insights to aspiring contractors who'll be one-person service providers, as well as to those who are setting up product-based businesses. A lot of web sources are much more oriented toward the latter category, and I'm in the former.

    In Question 1, I answered "about equal" because I think some courses lend themselves better to a physical classroom and others to web-based instruction. I think this course worked much better as an online class than it would have as a traditional lecture course or seminar.

    Exercises like the spreadsheet to estimate costs and fees, the initial mindmapping exercise, and website creation were great.

    With a few minor glitches here and there, the technology of the classroom itself worked very well--very little downtime.

    Gary, the instructor, was good at establishing rapport and trust without the advantages of face-to-face instruction. I always had the feeling that he really wanted the students to learn and be successful as freelancers.

    This was my first online course, and I was apprehensive about how it would work out (especially because of my technophobia). I found the introductory materials before the course started extremely helpful in putting some of my fears to rest, and I thought the rest of the course was also very kind to the technophobe.

    I already have recommended the course to several people.

    What suggestions do you have?

    The video and audio clips were fun and a nice change of pace in the lessons where they appeared. I'd suggest using a few more of them, if possible, but also strengthening the content a bit--most felt more like pep talks than additional information. Not that pep talks aren't welcome!

    I'd suggest finding a way to have one exercise for each lesson be the mindmapping or brainstorming exercise, but then including at least one additional exercise per lesson that's more along the lines of the spreadsheets or website creation.

    I thought the content of the lessons was uniformly good, but the verbal presentation varied from lesson to lesson. The lessons could probably be strengthened by uniform copyediting and by having someone who doesn't know the subject read every part of every lesson to make sure that all points are clear.

    The Discussion board may work much better (i.e., have more participation) in other courses than it did in our class. One possibility would be to have more discussion ideas or questions thrown in, especially at the beginning, by the instructor. Of course, if the students don't respond, the instructor shouldn't have to beat his/her head against a wall throughout the course.

    It brought to my attention a number of facts and issues that I did not consider about being an IC prior to starting the course.

    What suggestions do you have?

    The audio clips are almost impossible to hear on a dial-up connection, as it only plays for 10-15 seconds and then has to load more data into a buffer. Most did not seem that enlightening,and detracted from reading the lesson.

    Some of the graphics and layout of the lesson were also not the best. Some of the graphics should be removed and the lesson reformated for easier reading.

    What did you like about the course?

    The worksheets that allowed me to adapt information to fit my situation.

    What suggestions do you have?

    The course seemed to be designed more for the technical industry folks rather than the human services providers. At times the translation was difficult.

    What did you like about the course?

    There were countless references to other websites with really valuable information. The amount of research time saved alone was worth the cost of the class.

    Other tools I found particularly useful were: 1) Calculator for determining your minimum acceptable hourly rate 2) The mind mapping tool and exercises 3) The cash flow budget worksheet

    What suggestions do you have?

    Lack of student discussion was a let-down. Maybe if you pose a specific topic-related question at the end of each class, students will be more inclined to use the Discussion Board.

    Some of The strong points of the course where examples given in the lessons, very informative in each lesson and the step by step outline of being an independent contractor.
